Turning a bottle of supplements around and reading the "Supplement Facts" panel can feel like reading a foreign language. However, understanding this label is the most important step in ensuring you are purchasing a safe, high-quality product.
1. Serving Size and Servings Per Container
Always start at the top. The serving size tells you how many capsules you need to take to get the nutrients listed below. If a label boasts high amounts of a vitamin, but the serving size is 6 massive pills, it might not fit easily into your routine.
2. Identifying Proprietary Blends
A proprietary blend is a list of ingredients bundled together under one total weight. This allows companies to hide how much of each specific ingredient is actually in the product. They might list a premium ingredient on the front of the bottle, but only include a microscopic trace amount in the proprietary blend. A transparent label will list the exact amount of every active ingredient.
3. Other Ingredients (The Fillers)
Look beneath the main panel to the "Other Ingredients" section. This is where you'll find the components that make up the capsule itself, as well as any fillers or flow agents. You want this list to be as short and natural as possible. Look for indicators of non-GMO and natural sourcing.

Look for badges indicating that the product was manufactured following Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). While the FDA does not "approve" dietary supplements before they go to market, they do require facilities to follow these strict manufacturing guidelines to ensure safety and quality.
Now that you know what to look for in an eye health supplement, you can make an informed decision for your daily wellness routine.
